TITLE: Steinbach Hall: 52 Hillhouse Avenue, School of Management
DATE: 2004
Architect Henry Austin designed Steinbach Hall a residence for Professor John Pitkin Norton. Located on beautiful, tree lined Hillhouse Avenue, the 12,462 sf building is an early version of the towered Italian villa, and was purchased by the University in 1923. It was remodeled in 1979 to take on its current role as part of the School of Management Complex (a 1908 addition was removed and the basement altered). The current third floor and left wing are additions made to Austin’s initial design that remain. Restoration work to both the exterior and interior was performed by Giordano. Work included: extensive termite damage repair in the basement; replacement of all windows and doors; exterior stucco repair/replacement; exterior decorative stone repair (utilizing Jahn Mortar); repairing and replacing where lost of ornate plaster cove molding and ceiling panels; and restoration of historic interior millwork. Original detailing, such as ornate window canopies and balconies, that had been lost was also restored as part of the project.Additional Photos:
