TITLE: Branford / Saybrook and Jonathan Edwards Colleges

DATE: 2012

The Gothic Branford (157,642 sf), Saybrook (164,794 sf) and Jonathan Edwards (122,968 sf) Colleges were converted in 1933 from what was originally built as the Memorial Quadrangle to become Yale’s first two residential colleges. The original building of seam-faced granite, Indiana limestone, Briar Hill sandstone (and other stone from Idaho, Virginia and Connecticut) was completed in 1921. It is the prototype for all of Yale’s cloistered colleges, being composed of a cluster of various sized halls surrounding interior courts. As well as the student rooms, each college has rooms for Fellows, a common room, a dining hall, activity rooms in the basement, and a Master’s House. This is a complex of many different buildings arranged around several courtyards. Elaborately decorated carvings, arches, pinnacles, and turrets are woven within the architectural facade. The projects included comprehensive envelope (stone, masonry and brick restoration utilizing Jahn Mortar), and roof repairs as well as extensive concrete work, sitework and landscaping (including replacement of all bluestone and limestone paved courtyards). Original windows, doors, metal screening and trim were repaired and replaced with historically accurate replicas where necessary. There was also extensive restoration and refinishing of exterior doors and ironwork. In the interior, stone/ wood flooring was refinished; security systems and elevators were replaced; interior water damage was repaired; interior millwork was refinished; light fixtures were replaced with historically accurate, high performing replicas; and all walls were painted.
